There is a concept in traditional astrology that is so fundamental, so pervasive in its effects, that ignoring it means misreading nearly every chart you encounter. It is not an advanced technique reserved for specialists. Sect divides all charts into two categories: day charts and night charts. If the Sun was above the horizon at the moment of your birth, you have a day chart. If the Sun was below the horizon, you have a night chart. That single distinction — day or night — changes which planets are your strongest allies, which are your greatest challenges, and how every planet in your chart functions relative to every other.
In modern astrology, Jupiter is always considered beneficial and Saturn is always considered difficult. In traditional astrology with sect, this is only half true. Jupiter is the greater benefic in day charts but not in night charts. Saturn is the more challenging malefic in night charts but is significantly more manageable in day charts. Venus becomes the greater benefic at night. Mars becomes the more tolerable malefic at night.

What Sect Is
Sect (from the Latin secta, meaning "faction" or "party") divides the seven traditional planets into two teams:

Note: this depends on the house system used. In whole sign houses (the system used in Hellenistic astrology), the Descendant axis cleanly divides above from below. In Placidus or other quadrant house systems, the Sun's position relative to the Ascendant-Descendant axis is what determines sect.
If you were born during the day — even an overcast day, even during an eclipse — you have a day chart. If you were born at night — even on the night of a full Moon — you have a night chart. Sect is determined by the Sun's astronomical position, not by the quality of visible light.

The natal condition of Saturn matters — a night chart Saturn in Capricorn in the 10th house has considerable accidental strength that mitigates the contrary-to-sect status. When astrologers look for indicators of success, abundance, or protection in a chart, sect determines where to look first.
A day chart person with Jupiter conjunct the Midheaven and Venus in the 12th house has their greater benefic in the strongest possible position. Their career is blessed by Jupiter, and this is their greatest source of good fortune.
A night chart person with the same placements has their greater benefic (Venus) hidden in the 12th house while their lesser benefic (Jupiter) occupies the Midheaven. The career still benefits from Jupiter, but the chart's primary source of good fortune is less accessible — Venus in the 12th house operates behind the scenes, through solitude, institutions, or hidden gifts.
Malefic Challenges
Sect tells you not only which malefic is harder to deal with, but how it manifests.
A day chart person with Mars conjunct the Moon has a contrary-to-sect malefic touching their emotional life. This can produce emotional volatility, impulsive reactions, anger issues, or a combative inner world that is harder to manage.
A night chart person with the same Mars-Moon conjunction has an in-sect malefic touching their emotions. The Mars energy is still present — they still have intensity, passion, and a warrior instinct in emotional matters — but it is more controlled, more purposeful, and more likely to manifest as emotional courage rather than emotional destruction.

Sect and Essential Dignity
Sect does not replace essential dignity (domicile, exaltation, detriment, fall). It adds another layer. A planet can be dignified but contrary to sect (strong in sign but weakened by sect), or undignified but in sect (weak in sign but supported by sect). The most favorable condition is a planet that is both dignified and in sect. The most challenging is a planet that is both debilitated and contrary to sect.
