What Is a Birth Chart?

A birth chart (natal chart) is a map of where all the planets were at the exact moment of your birth, as seen from your birth location. It is the foundation of personal astrology — a cosmic snapshot that reveals personality, talents, challenges, and life themes. The chart includes positions of the Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto across 12 zodiac signs and 12 houses.

How Is It Calculated?

Calculating a birth chart requires three inputs: birth date, exact time, and location. Our engine uses the Swiss Ephemeris to compute planetary positions to within 0.001°. Then house cusps are calculated using the Placidus system (Whole Sign and Equal houses also available), all major and minor aspects between planets are identified, and key patterns — T-squares, grand trines, and stelliums — are detected.

Why Does It Matter?

A birth chart is astrology's most complete tool for self-understanding. It goes far beyond your Sun sign, revealing the complex interplay of all planetary energies in your life. Professional astrologers use natal charts for everything from career counseling to relationship analysis and timing important decisions.

Frequently Asked Questions

How accurate is the free birth chart calculator?

Astro Engine uses the Swiss Ephemeris — the same astronomical library used by NASA-affiliated researchers — so our free calculator is as accurate as paid professional software. Planetary positions are computed to 0.001 degrees of arc for dates between 5400 BCE and 5400 CE.

Is exact birth time needed for a natal chart?

Birth time is needed for calculating the Ascendant, house positions, and precise Moon placement. Without it, you will still get planetary positions by sign, but houses and the Ascendant will be missing. Check your birth certificate or hospital records for the most accurate time.

What is the difference between a natal chart and a birth chart?

A natal chart and a birth chart are the same thing — both terms refer to the map of planetary positions at the moment of birth. 'Natal' comes from the Latin word for 'birth.' Astrologers use both terms interchangeably.

What house system does this calculator use?

By default we use the Placidus house system, the most common in Western astrology. You can also choose Whole Sign or Equal houses in the advanced settings.

What is the difference between a natal chart and a horoscope?

A natal chart is your unique planetary map at birth — it never changes. A horoscope is a forecast based on current planetary movements (transits) relative to your natal chart. You need a natal chart first to get an accurate horoscope.
