What should you not do during Mercury retrograde?

The traditional advice is to avoid starting brand-new ventures, signing major contracts without thorough review, or making large technology purchases. However, this doesn't mean you should put your life on hold. The real guidance is: double-check important communications, back up your data, allow extra travel time, and read the fine print on any agreements. Mercury retrograde is better thought of as a review period, not a danger zone.

Does Mercury retrograde really affect you?

From an astronomical perspective, Mercury retrograde is simply an optical illusion caused by orbital mechanics. Mercury doesn't actually move backward. Astrologically, many practitioners observe that communication, technology, and travel tend to experience more hiccups during these periods. Whether that's cosmic influence or confirmation bias, the practical advice (review, back up, double-check) is solid regardless of the cause.

How long does Mercury retrograde last?

Mercury retrograde itself lasts approximately 3 weeks (19-24 days). However, the pre-retrograde shadow begins about 2 weeks before, and the post-retrograde shadow lasts about 2 weeks after. The full cycle from pre-shadow to post-shadow clearing is typically 6-8 weeks. Mercury goes retrograde 3-4 times per year, meaning about 20% of the year has Mercury in retrograde motion.
